I love writing. I don't love that young people learn in various settings that writing is not important until they come into a humanities course in which their writing skills are attached to a grade that might keep them from moving forward in their academic careers. I'm not sure who is responsible for all this unexamined STEM lust, but I feel we need to address it before we convince people young and old that thoughtful, interesting communication and critical thinking are entirely unimportant. I am a teacher and mother and partner and daughter, and a person who works in a place, and likes her neighbors, and worries a lot about racism and the insidious structures that allow it to persist indefinitely.
